Saturday 1st July 2017 - THE CHILHAM CHASE AND CHILL - at Chilham Castle

Chase and Chill at Chilham Castle on 1 July 2017

It’s time to limber up for the 401-year-old Chilham Chase, which takes place on the 1 July as part of a one-day Festival at Chilham Castle.

Full details about the weekend can be found at:

In 1616 Sir Dudley Digges built Chilham Castle and left money in his will for a race run in memory on his birthday - his will reads as follows:

A race run between teams of 'Gentlemen and Maidens of good character from Chilham and surrounding parishes'

More than four centuries later, the race is still held. The two-mile fun-run incorporates fancy dress, jumping over hurdles, a sack race and much more, including a prize for the best costume. Groups of 2+ run (or walk) the stunning race route around the beautiful grounds of the Castle.

The race is at the heart of a fun-filled day of festivities at the Castle, including live music, local artisan stalls, lawn games and displays from The Kent Costume’s Trust, the Morgan Club (classic car display) and The Hawking Centre (birds of prey display). Food and drinks will be available to purchase onsite with a bar supplied by Shepherd Neame and VIP area sponsored by Taittinger.

Throughout the afternoon and evening, the North Downs will echo with the sound of music thanks to a fantastic line-up of acts performing on stage. Expect to hear the smouldering jazz vocals of Sarah-Jane Hassell in Javajam, the eccentric tones and feel-good numbers of The Maida Vales, and the infamous ‘Raging Horns’ of The Chillbillies.
