Comedy fans are in for a rare treat on June 7 when the extraordinary Wilfredo aka Matt Roper headlines the No5 Club at the Arden Theatre in Faversham.

Wilfredo is a satire of the traditional Mediterranean romantic singer and has established himself as a cult figure at the Edinburgh Fringe and on the British musical festival scene, performing his own original masterpieces and wonderfully twisted cover versions.

The character is a grotesque caricature of Falstaffian appearance: trousers pulled up to the top of a corpulent stomach, a tight flamenco shirt, a wild black mop wig and a set of prominent prosthetic teeth. He began his life on stage performing cover versions of songs by Leonard Cohen, Phil Spector, Amy Winehouse and the Rolling Stones.

Wilfredo is notoriously ill-mannered; frequently salivating onstage, drinking and smoking his way throughout songs, while berating his musicians and audience members with insults and expletives. The character has divided critics, leading them to proclaim him as “strangely endearing”, “utterly charming and uplifting”, “unlikeable”,”quite inappropriate” and “a genius creation”.

Time Out said: “With the look of a tramp, the libido of a goat, and the voice of a romantic, we love him.” And Broadway Baby described him as “Incredibly funny.”

He is joined on the bill by the brilliant Sean Meo and special guests with Phil Zimmerman as MC.
